55th anniversary of the ceremonial ingress of Archbishop Karol Wojtyła.

55 years ago, on March 8, the ceremonial ingress of Archbishop Karol Wojtyła took place.

As rev. Kazimierz Figlewicz recalls in the Chronicle of the Wawel Cathedral, „the Archbishop approached the door of the Basilica walking in a procession under a canopy, which was carried by two Cracovians, two highlanders and two miners accompanied by the words of the song „Kto się w opiekę”.

Then, after having prayed at the grave of Saint Stanisław and Queen Jadwiga, he adored the Blessed Sacrament in the Batory Chapel. In front of the main altar the papal nomination bull was read and Wojtyła took the main altar and the throne of the archbishop, which was called the cathedral. The robes and episcopal insignia used during the Mass symbolized the continuity of the Cracow bishopric: the chasuble of Queen Anne Jagiellon, the rationale (liturgical vestment) of Queen Jadwiga, the mitre of the bishops from Lipsk, the ring of Bishop Maura and the pastoral staff of Bishop Małachowski.
